SAT阅读之所以难，不仅在于对词汇量要求高，也在于对词汇掌握要求全面、透彻。在SAT阅读文章中，我们经常碰到熟悉的单词，但是当我们把已知的意思代入句中时，却发现句子“一窍不通”，原因就在于我们掌握的意思并不是作者想要表达的意思。鉴于此，有必要对常见的“熟词僻义”进行专题讲解。

       今天欧美新导航Boris老师讲的单词是“bear”一词。请看下面的句子。

1. Then, in the roadway beyond, she saw a horse struggling with a more than ample load, and a carter of the sort that seems to bear a sullen hatred against the animal that helps him to earn a living. (OG test3 passage1 page564)

       本句中bear意思是“怀有、心怀（感情，尤指坏心情）”，常见搭配是bear sth against/towards sb.   He bears no resentment towards them. 他对他们毫无怨恨。

She bore him no ill will. 她对他没有恶意。

       所以整句话的翻译如下：然后，在站外的路上，她看到了一匹驮着很重货物艰难行走的马和一位马夫，这位马夫似乎对帮助他谋生的动物（马）生着闷气，怀恨在心。

2. She bore the desertion with philosophical indifference; her friends and relations were thoroughly well used to the fact of her luggage arriving without her.  (OG test3 passage1 page564)

       这句话中“bear”取“忍受”之义。她对于被火车抛弃毫不在意；朋友和亲戚已经彻底习惯了她“包裹先到人未到”。

3. Rising slowly from the earth that bore me and gave me sustenance, I am carried helplessly toward an uninhabited and hostile, or at best indifferent, part of the earth, littered with the bones of explorers and the wrecks of ships, frozen supply caches, messages scrawled with chilled fingers and hidden in cairns that no eye will ever see.(OG test4 passage1 page676)

       这个句子中“bore”是bear的过去式，意思是“生（孩子）”

4. But when the war was done, all those things sank into insignificance, and the great fact remained that they had played a part like men among men; that they had borne themselves so that when people asked what they had done of worth in those great years, all they had to say was that they had served decently and faithfully in the great armies.

       Bear oneself 意思是表现良好。

       但是当战争结束时，所有那些事情都不重要了，事实是，他们发挥的作用就像男人中的男人，他们表象良好，因此当人们问及在那些年他们做了什么有价值的事情时，他们只需要说他们在那些伟大的军队中恪尽职守、不失尊严。
