STEP数学是“Sixth Term Examination Papers in Mathematics”的简称,目前被视为剑桥、华威大学数学及相关类专业的入学附加考试。STEP数学官方网站是这样表述的“As of 2014, candidates applying to study Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick may be required to take STEP papers as part of the terms of their conditional offer. In addition, the University of Bristol, the University of Bath, the University of Oxford and Imperial College Londonencourage candidates to take STEP papers.

在2003年前，STEP考试可不仅仅就数学一科。其官网是这样表述的“Before 2003，STEP papers were available for a wide range of subjects, including, for example, Chemistry and Biology, but the Mathematics STEP paper is the only one now in use.”

这种情况和另一种考试Advanced Extension Awards（简称“AEA”）一样。最先的时候，很多科目都有AEA的考试，比如AEA数学、AEA物理、AEA化学，但是到最后只剩下AEA数学。到2015年，就连AEA数学都取消了。

鉴于STEP数学附加考试的难度并结合欧美新导航学员近几年考试的情况来看，要取得STEP成绩S或1的等级，最好提早一年准备。如果匆忙在考前一两个月才开始准备，很难取得理想成绩。
